Music 

As Unity In Marin welcomes people of many faiths and traditions, we endeavor to inspire hearts and transform lives through a rich and varied Music Ministry. From classical, jazz, gospel, and folk, to Sufi chant, singing bowls, and African drums, the Music at Unity In Marin resonates at some level with all who come through our doors.

Any given Sunday promises professional quality performances presented by nationally acclaimed soloists, award-winning guest artists, and a superb line-up of musicians from within Unity In Marin's gifted congregation and stellar choir.

 

Music Ministry Team

Unity In Marin is blessed to be located in the Bay Area. We can draw upon some of the best musical and other creative talent in the world to be on our team or to be guest musicians. The extra special blessing is that most of this talent is solidly grounded in their spiritual lives and embrace the Unity teachings.

Carolyn Gauthier, Music Director

Carolyn Gauthier, Music Director at Unity in Marin, has been a member of this congregation since 1996. She has a lifetime of experience in church music, since her father was a choir director when she was growing up. She sang with The Lighthouse Singers of Marin for 20 years and her own band Full Circle for 25. In 2003 Carolyn acted as interim director of the Unity in Marin music department and was on the search committee for its new leadership. Carolyn’s day job is being the Program Director at Bread & Roses, a non-profit organization that brings hope and healing through free, live entertainment to people in institutions.

Jeff Labes, Pianist

Jeff Labes, Pianist, is an accomplished, versatile performer. Having worked with several of the great singers of our time (Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, Tim Hardin, and Jonathan Edwards) he developed a personal style influenced by those associations. He has the rare gift to be an outstanding soloist as well as having the stylistic flexibility to enhance and not overwhelm the musicians he is accompanying.

 Deborah Rae Thomson,  UIM Choir Director

Inspired director, dynamic teacher and gifted composer, Deborah is a catalyst for awakening the heart with the beauty and joy of singing.  In addition to directing the UIM Choir, Deborah teaches music at the Burke’s School for Girls in San Francisco.  Deborah previously served as the Associate Director of The Lighthouse Singers of Marin, Director of the Joyful Noise Gospel Choir at the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, Director of Music at the Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church in Marin City and Director of the Followers of Christ Gospel Choir at the Presbyterian Church of Novato.

A frequent guest director at music workshops throughout the Bay Area, Deborah has led gospel choirs at the Mendocino Sufi Camp in California, the Sacred Music Camp at the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon, New York and the Spiritual Transformation through Music and Dance retreat at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York.

Deborah’s compositions have been recorded by the Gospel Music Workshop of America, the Edwin and Walter Hawkins Love Fellowship Conference Choir, The Lighthouse Singers of Marin and the Marin Girls’ Chorus. Those who work with Deborah are inspired with a musical communion of spiritual expression graced with light, love and laughter.
